Lecture: Prof. Adrienne Héritier, professor emeritus, European University Institute in Florence
Abstract:
The lecture will focus on the strategies which the EP applied across time in order to extend its institutional power. This increased institutional power allows the EP to wield more influence on policy making. The presentation will focus on the EP´s increase of power in legislation, the nomination and investiture of the Commission, the budgetary process as well as the substantive area of economic governance in the context of the Euro crisis.
To put the rise of the EP´s influence in relation to the power wielded by the other institutional actors, in particular member states and the European Council, it discusses arguments of the so-called ‘New intergovernmentalism’.
