Read more...The aim of this seminar is not to sum up what we know about the EU, but to ask what consequences the studies of the EU have had for political science as a discipline. The idea is to review the last forty years of political science research including the revolt against the European way of studying politics (formal-legal approaches, behavioural revolution, invasion of economic models) and then raise the question whether a new (old) European approach is in emergence once again.
Biography:
Prof. Johan P. Olsen is research director of ARENA - Centre for European Studies, University of Oslo. Among a range of scholarly contributions, Olsen has adduced the “garbage can” perspective of decision-making processes in formal organizations and contributed to institutionalism as theoretical framework, focusing on rule-based behaviour and the autonomy of institutions. Olsen has conducted research periods at the University of California, Irvine and Stanford University. In addition to several international research awards, he holds honourable doctorates at the Academy of Åbo, University of Copenhagen and the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Olsen has also held positions in numerous academic institutions, such as the research council of EUI in Florence.
