2020 Invited to participate, as an independent academic, in the Expert Group on the Future of Europe set up by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, the think tank of Social Democratic political groups at EU level, in the context of the “Conference on the Future of Europe” discussing the future of democracy and European integration during the years 2020-22.

2018 and 2019 (part-time) Robert Schuman Fellowship at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy

2015 Elected as a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts

2013 Elected as a Full Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Wirkliches Mitglied).

2013: Invited to hold the "Journal of Common Market Studies Annual Review Lecture" (entitled "Is the EU losing its credibility?", University of Bratislava).

2010 Prize of the Journal of European Public Policy: The Journal of European Public Policy (JEPP) is one of the leading journals world-wide in the field of European integration studies. Its 2010 prize for the "most downloaded article not in a Special Issue" was attributed for Falkner's paper on ‘Models of Governance: Towards a Conceptual Clarification’ co-authored with O. Treib und H. Bähr.

2009 Award for European Information Sources, conferred by the European Information Association (London) for the Living Reviews in European Governance (Editor-in-Chief: Gerda Falkner).

Prize for the best article published in 2008 in the "Journal of Common Market Studies", for 'Three Worlds of Compliance or Four? The EU-15 Compared to New Member States' (with O. Treib) in Vol. 46(2) March 2008. According to the 2008 ISI Citation Reports for the Social Sciences Citation Index, the interdisciplinary Journal of Common Market Studies is no. 8 of the 99 journals listed worldwide from the broad field of political science (rank 22 of the 209 economics journals included and no. 6 of 55 in International Relations).

Dr.-Wilfried-Haslauer Research Prize by the Institut für Politisch-Historische Studien, Salzburg (2007)

"Best Book in EU Studies" 2005/2006 Prize for "Complying with Europe, Cambridge University Press", (co-authored with Oliver Treib, Miriam Hartlapp and Simone Leiber) by the European Union Studies Association of the USA (awarded 2007).
