EU Policies in a Global Perspective:
Shaping or taking international regimes?
The EU’s emerging role in global governance has attracted a growing amount of research. Yet, comparing its policy-specific impact at the international level remains largely still a research desideratum. This project studies the EU’s contribution to global governance in central EU policy domains. It seeks to capture the relative importance of each sectoral EU regime in the multilevel global governance system, as compared to both national and global activities. On this basis, the main part of the project examines the EU’s export of rules, norms and standards in selected policy areas to the international stage. Its theoretical framework draws on the literature on external EU governance and international policy diffusion, distinguishing different pathways and mechanisms for EU policy export. Applying a common analytical framework to the study of prominent cases of EU export, the project will contribute to a better understanding of the EU’s role in shaping global policies, the mechanisms it uses and the conditions under which it succeeds or fails.
