Short biography

Beatrice Carella is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for European Integration Research (EIF), Department of Political Science, University of Vienna, where she is a member of the Vienna Working Group on Digital Europe. Her research interests span across EU politics and policy-making, with a focus on EU social and digital policies, and the politics of welfare state development at national level.

Prior to joining EIF, she was a member of the ERC Synergy Grant project “SOLID – Policy Crisis and Crisis Politics. Sovereignty, Solidarity and Identity in the EU post 2008” as a postdoctoral research fellow, based at the University of Milan. She was previously a research collaborator at the University of Aosta Valley for a project on EU social economy policies and their impact at national and subnational level. Her doctoral dissertation analysed the role played by populist parties from the left on welfare reforms in Southern Europe after the global financial crisis. Outside of academia, she worked at the European Policy Centre in Brussels as a research assistant in the programme “Social Europe and Well-being”.

Beatrice holds a PhD in Political Science and Sociology from Scuola Normale Superiore in Italy, an MA in International Public Management from SciencesPo Paris, a MSc in Economics and Management of Government and International Organizations and a BSc in Economics and Social Sciences, both from Bocconi University.
